The idea is simple. There are those that would exercise power and authority over us. There are those that we have given the privilege of administrating the common resource to the ends of the common good.

It appears to me that we need to check in with our leaders and make sure that they are understanding the trust and responsibility of their office. We should also insure that they are in full agreement as to what is the rightful use of force by the State.

Therefore, I purpose that we begin a letter writing campaign asking all elected officials to express in their own words where the authority that their office exercises stem from. Under what philosophy do they claim the right to rule?

I have written a sample letter in my post A Question of Authority. You can use that our pen your own.

The goal is to identify the mind set of those that are wielding your power in your your name. Write to your elected officials from the City, County, State, and Federal levels. They are your representative they owe you the answer to these questions.

Let us begin the process of reining in the excesses of the use of governmental force.
